Root Canal FAQ's

A root canal is a dental procedure used to treat and save a tooth that is infected or severely decayed. During the procedure, the infected or damaged pulp inside the tooth is removed, and the inside of the tooth is cleaned, disinfected, and sealed to prevent further infection.

A root canal is needed when the pulp tissue inside the tooth becomes infected or inflamed due to deep decay, repeated dental procedures on the tooth, a crack or chip in the tooth, or trauma to the tooth. Without treatment, the infection can spread, leading to severe pain, swelling, and possible tooth loss.

Signs that a root canal may be needed include severe tooth pain, prolonged sensitivity to hot or cold temperatures, swelling or tenderness in the gums, a pimple-like bump on the gums, or discoloration of the tooth. However, not all infected teeth exhibit symptoms, so regular dental check-ups are essential for early detection.

The process of getting a root canal typically involves multiple steps over one or more dental visits. First, the dentist will numb the tooth and surrounding area with local anesthesia to ensure comfort during the procedure. Then, the infected pulp is removed, and the inside of the tooth is thoroughly cleaned and disinfected. Finally, the tooth is sealed with a filling material or capped with a dental crown to restore its function and appearance.

Contrary to popular belief, root canal treatment is not typically painful. With modern techniques and local anesthesia, most patients experience minimal discomfort during the procedure. After the procedure, some mild soreness or discomfort is common and can usually be managed with over-the-counter pain medications.
