Our practice is equipped with advanced digital imaging technology that enables us to detect dental decay with exceptional clarity and precision. We offer laser cavity detection technology to complement our digital imaging capabilities at Vlass & Merritt Dental Care. Decay Detection FAQ's

Decay detection is a process used by dentists to identify and diagnose dental caries (tooth decay) in its early stages before it progresses to more extensive damage requiring restorative treatment. Decay detection methods include visual examination, dental X-rays, and advanced technologies such as laser fluorescence and digital imaging systems.

Dentists use a combination of visual inspection, probing with dental instruments, and diagnostic tools to detect tooth decay. During a dental exam, the dentist will visually inspect the teeth for signs of decay, such as discoloration, softening of the enamel, or visible cavities. X-rays are also commonly used to detect decay between teeth and below the gum line, where it may not be visible to the naked eye.

Tooth decay may present with symptoms such as tooth sensitivity to hot, cold, or sweet foods and beverages, pain or discomfort when biting or chewing, visible pits or holes in the teeth, and discoloration or staining on the tooth surface. However, in the early stages, tooth decay may not cause noticeable symptoms, underscoring the importance of regular dental check-ups for early detection and intervention.

Yes, decay detection methods such as dental X-rays and advanced imaging technologies can detect cavities that may not be visible during a visual examination alone. X-rays are particularly useful for detecting decay between teeth and beneath the enamel surface, where cavities may be hidden from view. Laser fluorescence and digital imaging systems can also help detect early signs of decay by measuring changes in tooth density and composition.

Early detection of tooth decay is essential for preventing further progression of the disease and preserving tooth structure. When detected early, decay can often be treated with minimally invasive techniques such as dental fillings or fluoride treatments, helping to prevent the need for more extensive and costly restorative procedures such as root canals or dental crowns. Early intervention also reduces the risk of complications such as toothaches, infections, and tooth loss.

We are new patients to the practice and have had the pleasure of seeing Dr. Joseph Merritt. Dr. Merritt is currently treating my mom who is 90 years old and helping her with some aging gum and teeth issues. The technology that Dr. MERRITT has introduced us to has been absolutely incredible but with technology comes questions. Dr. MERRITT took the time to explain everything to us, step-by-step and answered each and every question. He took his time and made sure Mom understood what he was recommending and why. I was very impressed with his attention to detail and caring approach to each conversation. We just returned from our second visit and again can report another great experience and the communication with the practice has been excellent. Kim coordinated all the transfer of mom’s dental records within an hour, so our visits have been very thorough. Did I mention the amazing technology? It is worth repeating. I am so relieved my mom is in excellent hands and we will be returning to continue the treatments Dr. MERRITT has recommended.
Dr. Vlass is my dentist even though I drive 1.5 hours to his office. I trust his judgment and he does a terrific job with my teeth. As I am advanced in years, and he has had to deal with some sensitive conditions in my mouth with outstanding results. I highly recommend their practice.
Have you ever thought you would take the time to give a dentist a review...let alone 5 stars? Well, me neither, until now. My business is all about relationships, so I pay attention when someone else values and understands that relationships are everything too. Joey Merritt, not only gets it, he embraces it. His actions and professionalism forced me to leave a dental practice that my entire family was immensely happy with when one emergency issue was treated with immediate concern at the expense of his personal time. Prior to Joey meeting me in a bad moment, the only thing we knew about each other was that my wife played tennis with his mom. What I learned after that about him was more than enough to immediately come home and tell my family that we had a new friend and dentist for life. True story.
I LOVE Dr. Merritt! He's so kind and compassionate. He's an incredible dentist! His staff is also on the same level. I've been going there for years. I first saw Dr. Vlass, then Dr. Merritt when he joined the practice. I can't recommend them enough!!
I feel that the staff listens to my concerns when I call and they try to schedule me as soon as possible. When I am seen I am confident of their care of my teeth and dental concerns. The staff is very professional! I have been seen by Dr Vlass and Dr Merritt and both are very caring and exceptional dentists. This is an outstanding dental practice! I love my dentists!!
