Cancer Screening FAQ's

Oral cancer screening is a visual and physical examination performed by a dentist or oral health professional to detect signs of oral cancer or precancerous conditions in the mouth, lips, tongue, throat, and surrounding tissues.

Oral cancer screening is important for the early detection of oral cancer, which can improve treatment outcomes and increase the chances of successful recovery. Early detection allows for prompt intervention and treatment, potentially preventing the spread of cancer to other parts of the body.

Oral cancer screening is recommended for adults of all ages, especially those with risk factors such as tobacco use (including smoking and smokeless tobacco), heavy alcohol consumption, previous history of oral cancer, exposure to human papillomavirus (HPV), and prolonged sun exposure (for lip cancer).

Oral cancer screening typically involves a visual examination of the oral cavity and palpation (physical inspection) of the lips, gums, tongue, throat, and surrounding tissues. Your dentist may also use additional screening tools such as oral cancer screening devices or imaging tests to aid in the detection of abnormalities.

The frequency of oral cancer screening may vary depending on individual risk factors and the recommendations of your dentist or healthcare provider. In general, oral cancer screening is often performed as part of routine dental check-ups, which are typically recommended every six months for most adults.
