Periodontal Therapy FAQ's

Periodontal therapy, also known as gum disease treatment, is a series of procedures aimed at managing and treating periodontal (gum) disease, which is an infection of the tissues surrounding and supporting the teeth. It typically involves deep cleaning techniques to remove plaque and tartar buildup, reduce inflammation, and restore gum health.

Gum disease can present with symptoms such as swollen or bleeding gums, persistent bad breath, receding gums, loose teeth, changes in the fit of dentures, and the formation of deep pockets between the teeth and gums. However, in some cases, gum disease may be present without noticeable symptoms, highlighting the importance of regular dental check-ups and periodontal evaluations.

Periodontal therapy typically begins with a comprehensive periodontal evaluation to assess the extent of gum disease and determine the most appropriate treatment approach. Common treatments may include scaling and root planing (deep cleaning), laser therapy, antibiotic therapy, and surgical procedures such as gum grafting or pocket reduction surgery. The goal is to remove bacteria and plaque from below the gum line, promote healing, and prevent further damage to the gums and supporting structures.

In the early stages of gum disease (gingivitis), professional dental cleanings and improved oral hygiene practices at home may be sufficient to reverse the condition and restore gum health. However, in more advanced stages of gum disease (periodontitis), periodontal therapy can help manage the disease, prevent further progression, and preserve the remaining teeth and supporting structures. While periodontal therapy cannot fully reverse the damage caused by gum disease, it can effectively control the infection and improve oral health outcomes.

The duration of periodontal therapy varies depending on the severity of the gum disease and the specific treatments required. In mild cases of gum disease, a single session of deep cleaning (scaling and root planing) may be sufficient to address the condition. However, more advanced cases may require multiple appointments over several weeks or months to achieve optimal results. It’s essential to follow your dentist or periodontist’s recommendations for ongoing maintenance and periodontal care to prevent recurrence of gum disease.
