Bite Balancing FAQ's

Bite balancing, also known as occlusal adjustment or bite equilibration, is a dental procedure that involves making adjustments to the biting surfaces of the teeth to achieve a more harmonious bite relationship. It aims to balance the forces exerted on the teeth and surrounding structures when the jaws come together, improving comfort, function, and overall oral health.

A misaligned bite, also known as malocclusion, can lead to various oral health problems, including jaw pain, headaches, tooth wear, and temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorders. Bite balancing may be recommended to correct issues such as uneven tooth wear, tooth sensitivity, difficulty chewing or speaking, jaw muscle fatigue, or clicking or popping noises in the jaw joint.

Bite balancing is typically performed by a dentist or prosthodontist using various techniques and instruments to assess the bite relationship and make necessary adjustments. This may involve selectively reshaping the biting surfaces of the teeth, removing small amounts of enamel, or adjusting dental restorations such as crowns or fillings. The goal is to achieve a stable and comfortable bite position that distributes forces evenly across the teeth.

Bite balancing can offer several benefits, including improved chewing efficiency, reduced risk of tooth wear and damage, alleviation of jaw pain and discomfort, enhanced stability of dental restorations, and prevention of future dental problems associated with malocclusion. By achieving a more harmonious bite relationship, patients can enjoy greater comfort and function in their daily activities.

While bite balancing can provide significant improvement in bite harmony and function, it may not be a permanent solution in all cases. Factors such as changes in tooth position, dental restorations, or jaw function over time may necessitate further adjustments or maintenance to maintain the balance achieved through bite balancing. Regular dental check-ups and adjustments may be recommended to monitor the stability of the bite relationship.
