TMD / TMJ FAQ's

Temporomandibular Joint Disorder (TMD) refers to a group of conditions that affect the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) and the muscles surrounding the jaw. TMD can cause pain, discomfort, and dysfunction in the jaw joint and surrounding areas.

Symptoms of TMD may include jaw pain or tenderness, difficulty or discomfort when chewing, clicking or popping sounds in the jaw joint, limited range of motion in the jaw, headaches, earaches, facial pain, and neck or shoulder pain. Some individuals may also experience locking of the jaw joint.

TMD can be caused by various factors, including jaw misalignment, injury or trauma to the jaw joint, teeth grinding or clenching (bruxism), stress or tension, arthritis, and structural issues in the jaw joint or surrounding tissues. Certain habits or behaviors, such as chewing gum excessively or biting hard objects, can also contribute to TMD.

TMD is typically diagnosed through a comprehensive evaluation by a dentist or healthcare provider. This may include a review of the patient’s medical and dental history, a physical examination of the jaw joint and surrounding muscles, and diagnostic tests such as X-rays, MRI, or CT scans to assess the structure and function of the TMJ.

Treatment for TMD depends on the underlying cause and severity of the condition. Conservative treatment options may include lifestyle modifications (such as stress management techniques), jaw exercises, physical therapy, and wearing a night guard or oral splint to prevent teeth grinding. In some cases, medications or injections may be recommended to alleviate pain and inflammation. In severe cases, surgery may be necessary.
